Travelling for Prescription Boobs

This summer - sparked by my epic gender reveal party last february - I have finally made the decision that I want to go seek out hormone replacement therapy. Unfortunately, getting gender affirming care in the Netherlands comes with a waiting list. A really long waiting list. A waiting list that is between 50 and 260 Weeks long actually.

Personally, after 22 years having been too unsure and doubtful and insecure, I don’t really feel like waiting anymore, especially for anything more than like… 10 weeks? Is that too entitled? How can I avoid a 50 week waiting list?

Oh yeah… I have the privilege of having been born in Munich and being covered by my parent’s private health insurance plan until I turn 26. So, I call up a psychologist that I found on this website, and I immediately get offered a consultation appointment a week away from the day I’m calling. Huh.

Anyways, due to not wanting to drop crazy cash on a train ticket (I am still a student after all), I ask if it’s possible to make an appointment about 3 weeks later. Despite usually not booking that far in advance, they made an exception for me! What’s up doc!

3 Weeks later…

I arrived to Munich yesterday, my appointment is tomorrow, I’m beyond excited, the Oktoberfest is in full swing, the first ICE I took yesterday smelled like piss, the later ICE I took had to stop upon entering Munich since some Oktoberfest drunks took a wrong turn and made their way onto the train tracks, the Munich metro was overfilled with Lederhosen, sweaty, screaming guys, and a light (heavy) hoppy aroma filling the air, there is a sense of frantic intoxication - ecstasy, if you will - being cast upon this city; upon myself.

Piss train approaching. Me at Utrecht Centraal, looking towards the train I’m about to take, blissfully unaware that it intensely smells like piss inside.

The journey from Delft to Munich takes approximately eight hours. Fueled by my cute little pink pill of Elvanse and a coffee-heavy breakfast, I get this website into a working state and write my first blog entry.

In my flow state I reflect on the absurdity of a 260 week long waiting list, how I needed to reap the benefits of a two tiered health-care system, and how I traveled 800km just so I can get help without having to wait longer than 6 full term pregnancies. Knowing the vast majority of my trans siblings in this world don’t have access to health care the way I do, I’ll be supporting this NL-based fundraiser called “Don’t Go We Will Fund Them”. I personally know the person that established this fundraiser, and she’s quite possibly the most amazing woman I have ever met in the few years I’ve been active in the queer electronic music scene in Amsterdam.

Go check it out! Go support if you’re able! Quiquox says trans rights!
